The Food Sector Re-Emerges as the Key Growth Market
for Oils & Fats in 2012/13...
World consumption of oils and fats has been strongly determined by the demand from the
biofuel sector in recent years. During 2005/06-2011/12 the biofuel market accounted for
35-45% of the annual growth in global consumption of 17 oils & fats...
In the season 2012/13 the demand for oils and fats for biofuels will probably suffer a major
setback with the expected increase of only 0.2-0.3 Mn T being the lowest in at least 10 years.
This expectation can be traced back to the developments in some of the major biofuel
producing countries...

World Oilseed Supplies Set to Recover Pronouncedly by 28 Mn T in
2013/14, If Weather Cooperates...
Current prospects are for a sizable increase in world
supplies of 10 oilseeds to 557 Mn T in 2013/14, approximately
28 Mn T above a year earlier, of which soybeans
345 Mn T (up 25 Mn T). If our current forecasts
materialize, world supplies will become ample next
season in contrast to the tightness prevailing in most of
2012/13 as well as in 2011/12.
From the current point of view, next season’s world
supplies will be sufficiently ample to allow for a sizable
increase of 14 Mn T in world consumption to 471 Mn T,
most of which in soybeans...

Growth in Biodiesel Production Seen Slowing to Only 1.0 Mn T in 2013...
World production of biodiesel is forecast in the
vicinity of 24.4 Mn T in Jan/Dec 2013, up from an
estimated 23.4 Mn T in 2012.
We thus expect a continuation
of the rather sluggish growth in the biodiesel
sector after the annual increase slowed down from 2.2
Mn T in 2010 and 3.7 Mn T in 2011 to only around 1.3
Mn T last year. This development is mirrored in a
further slowdown of the total consumption growth of 17
oils & fats...

World Supplies of Castor Oil May Decline Next Season on Account
of India...
there is a high probability that Indian
farmers will cut castor bean plantings this year (for the
2013/14 crop) in favour of other more lucrative crops.
At
the moment castorseed prices in India are at large
discounts to groundnuts, sesameseed, other oilseeds
and grains. They have even fallen below soybeans, a
rare occurrence...

Oilseed Crushings to Decline by 2.5 Mn T in Oct/Sept 2012/13...
In our revised estimate
we place world
crushings of 7 oilseeds at
382.6 Mn T in Oct/Sept
2012/13. This is somewhat
less than expected
and down 2.5 Mn T from
last year, thus marking
the first year-on-year reduction
in 24 years. It will
be occurring mainly in
sunflowerseed, cottonseed
and groundnuts...

Sharply Higher South American Soybean Exports in April & May
2013...
South American soybean exports are now
gaining momentum. Soybean supplies at the
ports have significantly improved. But in the first
week of May there were still long waiting times at
the ports of Paranagua and Santos, partly of as
much as 35-60 days...
In our current tentative estimate we expect total
soybean exports of the 4 major South American countries
to reach a record 10.8 Mn T in May compared with
the previous high of 10.0 Mn T a month earlier and 9.6
Mn T in May last year...
